Food Pyramid Concept Map
Food Pyramid
I. Fats, Oils, & Sweets

Chocolate comes from the cocoa tree. There are many different kinds of chocolate such as dark, white, milk chocolate and more. Although it is eaten for pleasure it is not healthy to consume too much on a daily level. There are good and bad health risks. Chocolate increase the heart rate and brain activity, but it also positively affects the circulatory systems.

B. Whole Milk
Milk comes from mammals, mainly cattle. It provides calcium, protein, vitamins A and D, and phosphorus. Milk is high in saturated fats but along with other varieties, skimmed milk is an alternative. Three cups of dairy products are recommended a day.
III. Meat,, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans & Nuts
The meat group is the major source of protein, iron, zinc, and vitamins B12. Many of these nutrients can also be found in dry beans and notes. Meat mainly comes from the muscles of animals. There are alternatives to eating meats such as tofu. It resembles meat but is made from cheese, eggs, and soy. It is suggested that 2-3 servings a day should be eaten by adults and it should be 4oz or the size of a deck of cards.

IV. Vegetables
Vegetables are apart of the plant family. The only part of the plant that is considered to be a vegetable is the root, stem, and the flower. Vegetables are low in fats and calories. The contain many vitamins and minerals. It is important to eat a variety of vegetables because they all contain different vitamins and minerals.

A. Pepo
A pepo is also known as a many- seeded berry. It has a fleshy seeded interior and a hard rind. It also has the characteristics of the fruit of the gourd family. Some examples of the pepo fruit are: watermelon, squash, pumpkin, and cucumbers.

ReplyDeleteI think the food pyramid is a great idea to teach the children! Your concept map looks good and for an assignment you could work with them on creating their own pyramid or plates to keep so they can have the portions with them.

ReplyDeleteI love the concept. Most young children only know what fast food is and don't eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. Mississippi is the fatest state and we need to educate our children so that we can change this.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea since Mississippi is known for being overweight. I think with this lesson you could excite students to eat healthier because of what they learn. I like your concept map, it is colorful and easy to read. I think you should bring in food, that always excites children!
ReplyDeleteThis is VERY important because we have one of the most obese states in the country. Students should know how to maintain their weight and how to eat healthy to better their future. For fun the class can have a healthy party and bring healthy food into the classroom one Friday. I always loved eating in class.
ReplyDeleteYou picked a great topic. Our state is the number state for obesity. This is a subject that should be taken seriously and be taught to all children. I love the food plate, I have never seen that. You did a great job on your map. It is very colorful and you chose great pictures. Maybe you could bring in a snack while you were teaching this lesson. You could pick a snack that taste good but is a healthy snack for them. Great job!

ReplyDeleteI believe that every elementary school student should know the food prymaid. This is a very important topic because Mississippi is the fattest state in the United States. Elementary school students should learn to start making better choices at home and at school. I would definitely, without a doubt in my mind, teach this to my class. I really like the colors and the layout of the concept map. I especially like how the food plate link. It is very educational.

ReplyDeleteBritney, I really like this concept map. It is a great thing to teach the children especially in the state of Mississippi because we are the most obese state. I think you could have each child's parent prepare a healthy snack each day to bring and that could be one hands on activity the kids could make a snack themselves. I also love the look of your map! Excellent job!
